The tool finds the restriction.
For the scar tissue and adhesions that keep an old injury from moving right: precise tools that find the restriction and break it down, so the tissue can heal and glide again.
What It Is
When tissue heals after an injury or surgery, it doesn’t always heal smooth. Fibers can knit together into adhesions and scar tissue that snag, restrict, and keep the area from moving the way it should.
IASTM, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, uses specially designed tools that glide over the skin to find those restrictions. The edge picks up exactly where the tissue is bound, then works to break it down, sparking fresh blood flow and the body’s own repair process. It’s a close cousin of the Graston Technique.
The tool is guided by your cause-first evaluation, so we work the restriction that’s actually limiting you, not just the spot that’s sore. You’ve told yourself the old injury is just how your body is now. It doesn’t have to be. Adhesions respond, even years later.
Always optional, never sprung on you
What It Helps
If an old injury never moved right again, scar tissue and adhesions are often the reason. Left alone, that restriction pulls the surrounding tissue out of line, and the injury you thought had healed keeps flaring up.

Questions, Answered
You’ll feel the tool find the restricted spots, and those can be tender as it works, but it shouldn’t be sharp or unbearable. Most people feel looser right after. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy controls the pressure to match what your tissue is ready for, and it’s always optional.
They’re close cousins. Graston is one brand-name version of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, taught as a specific system with its own tools. IASTM is the broader technique. The goal is the same either way: find the adhesion or scar tissue and break it down so the area can heal and move freely again.
